Great 1976 Show!
On June 14, 1976, at the Beacon Theatre in NYC, I witnessed the Michigan State Spartans perform in a show that ranks among my top three favorites. The other two memorable performances for me include a rocking '77 show at Winterland and a fantastic '73 show.
I am a huge fan of 1976 Dead. Their performances are very tight, with minimal downtime, and they deliver a nice, tight, funky rock sound. The setlist for this particular show was incredible, featuring many hidden gems such as Cosmic Charlie, Crazy Fingers, and, of course, High Time.
The second set stole the show from start to finish, although there were some great moments in the first set as well. Big River and Playin' were standout performances. Surprisingly, the supplication segment left a lasting impression on me, even though Lazy Lightning - Supplication is not typically a top request of mine. Initially, I thought this was a '73 show until Might as Well confirmed it as '76.
The second set was hands down the best performance I've ever seen from the Michigan State Spartans. They seamlessly transitioned from slower songs to fast, funky rock tunes. Noteworthy pairings included Wheel - Samson, High Time - Music, Crazy Fingers - Dancin, and Cosmic Charlie - Help Suite. The rocking jam during the closer, Around and Around, truly shook up Hollywood on that Friday night.
Attending this show was a decision I do not regret. The venue was fantastic, and the outdoor patio and lounge provided a refreshing atmosphere on that cool October evening.
If there was one thing that could have made the experience better, it would have been witnessing an actual Dead show in NYC in '76. However, I am grateful to the Michigan State Spartans for giving us younger fans the next best thing.
